Description:

Bartlett's trip to India marked an important turning point in his artistic vision, as he increasingly began to experiment with different lighting effects. This is often revealed in the comments preserved in his sketchbooks; for example, Bartlett said of this composition "The noon--day sun prints patterns on the white marble by the lake." Bartlett's interest in light culminated with the woodblock prints he designed for Japanese publisher Watanabe Shözaburö, such as this one. The highly skilled printers in Watanabe's workshop drew on traditional techniques like such as bokashi color gradation, used in the blue of the water here, to add even greater drama to Bartlett's work.
