Location:

Honolulu Museum of Art School

Event Information:

TEMARI, Center for Asian and Pacific Arts, in partnership with the Honolulu Museum of Art presents this celebration of boro, which means "rags" in Japanese.

Inspired by the exhibition Remaining Remnants, the Boro Festival includes talks on textiles, demonstrations, and a boro marketplace, with proceeds going to Honolulu Museum of Art School programs.

"TEMARI is focused on fabrics of all kinds," says TEMARI executive director Ann Asakura. "When boro became the hot new word at Louis Vuitton for its 2013 spring/summer collection, we thought people need to know where this word comes from, and this is the perfect opportunity. Visitors will see other aspects of boro—it's not just dying and stitching, you can make functional objects that you can wear as well as decorative objects. When you look at a cherished futon cover that has been woven into slippers, you can see the loving concept of boro."
