Honolulu Academy of Arts
'Bali High' information
ARTafterDARK is the Honolulu Academy of Arts' monthly art party organized by a dynamic group of young volunteers dedicated to exploring the arts. This month's ARTafterDARK is chaired by Lacy Matsumoto and Town 's Ed Kenney & Keoni Willing.
Summer starts sultry and tropical right here.
NEW THIS MONTH: Bali comes alive with their annual Kite Festival in July. ARTafterDARK celebrates the tradition early—visit the Banyan Courtyard to see hand-painted Balinese kites. This is where you'll also now find Town's main food station.
Central Courtyard: Listen to the down-tempo house music of djsilvana, 6-9pm.
Kinau Courtyard: Segara Madu, the University of Hawai‘i's Balinese Gamelan Ensemble, performs mesmerizing music and dance—twice! Performance 1: 6:30-7:30pm Performance 2: 7:45-8:45pm
Luce Pavilion: See, touch, and even try on Indonesian and Balinese masks, 6:30-8:30pm. A docent will be present to answer your questions. You can take photos of your friends wearing masks—but please remember no flash photography is allowed in the galleries!
Spotlight Gallery: Go on a docent-led zip tour of The Christensen Fund Gallery of Indonesian Art (Gallery 25), located behind Kinau Courtyard.
Zip tour 1: 6:30-7:00pm
Zip tour 2: 7:30-8:00pm
Please meet the docents inside the gallery.
All the first floor art galleries are open during ARTafterDARK for you to enjoy. Academy docents will be present in the following galleries:
Gallery 9: William Blake's Illustrations of the Book of Job
Gallery10: 19th-century European Painting & Sculpture
Gallery 21: Picturesque Prints: Japanese Woodblock Art in the 20th Century
Gallery 27: Modern & Contemporary Art Gallery
Gallery 28: From Whistler to Warhol: Modernism on Paper
As always, food and drink from Town and Downtown will be available for purchase. The main food station is in Banyan Courtyard, and a smaller food station is in Luce Pavilion along with the main bar.
Every month we can't wait to see what creative culinary answer chef Ed Kenney has to the theme. He came up with two fabulous interpretations this month!
In Luce Pavilion: Balinese plate
Nasi campur (or mixed rice—jasmine rice topped with all kinds of stuff), beef rendang (fragrantly spiced dry curry beef), hardboiled egg with kecap manis (Indonesia's sweet, thick shoyu), grilled fish paste stick, watercress, acar (pickles)
In Banyan Courtyard: Call it what you will (we call it the stoner plate)
Chips (made from sweet potato, pork skins, hasu and yuca)
Poutine with Hawaiian red veal gravy and fresh cheese (poutine is a Canadian comfort food of fries traditionally topped with cheese curds and chicken or veal gravy)
Kim chee wings
Warm butterscotch pecan blondie with whipped crème fraîche, apple bananas and salted caramel
Dark chocolate dipped Pringles
