Ring in the 2016 Lunar New Year with Chinese cultural activities and performances, including lion and dragon dances, martial arts, and folk dancing.

ART ACTIVITY 

Make a monkey headband: Monkey see, monkey do! Join artist Lisa Shiroma and make your own monkey headband and celebrate the Chinese New Year in Monkey style. Kids will use paper to create a headband, and then attach ears, and googily eyes.  Wear your headband around the museum all day as your enjoy the Chinese New Year celebration!

Make a monkey clothespin clip: Join Artist of Hawaiʻi 2015 Lauren Trangmar to make a magnetic monkey clothespin. Design the face and then attach arms, legs, and a curly tail to give your monkey it’s own personality. You can use your monkey clothespin magnet to hang your artwork or photos on the kitchen fridge.

Drawing Contest: Kids ages 1 to 17 are encouraged to enter! The museum gives contestants a theme and drawing supplies. The winner receives a Supporting Membership to the Honolulu Museum of Art ($100 value), and his or her artwork is used to create the following month’s event brochure and is posted on the museum's website. ENTERTAINMENT

11:15am­–noon: Guang Zhong Chinese Music Ensemble

Noon–12:30pm: Gee Yung International Chinese Lion Dance

12:30–1:30pm: Gee Yung Martial arts and drums

1:30–2pm: Gee Yung Lion Pole Dance—see then perform 10 feet off the ground!

2:30–3pm: Rainbow Dance Troupe

CULTURAL ACTIVITIES WITH THE ASSOCIATED CHINESE UNIVERSITY WOMEN (ACUW): 

• Narcissus exhibit and demonstrations

• Paper crafts—double happiness symbol paper cutouts and paper folding.

• Chinese calligraphy

• Learn to play mah jong
