Transplanting Thomas Hardy's well-loved Tess of the D'Urbervilles to India, Michael Winterbottom (24 Hour Party People, The Trip) trains his masterful lens on the eldest daughter of a poor family in Rajasthan. Tess—played by Slumdog Milionaire's Freida Pinto—works in a nearby resort to help pay the bills. Jay is the wealthy son of a property developer who takes up managing the resort at his father's request. When he meets Trishna at a dance, their fates become intertwined.
