Doris Duke Theatre

About the Film:

Directed by Baz Luhrmann. USA, 1996, 120mins

Baz Luhrmann brings his signature visual flair to this unconventional re-telling of Romeo and Juliet, set in a post-modern Verona Beach where swords are a brand of gun and bored youths are easily spurred toward violence. Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes portray the star-crossed lovers.

Special guest at 7:30pm: Valerie Wayne, Professor Emeritus in English at the University of Hawai'i, Manoa, introduces the film and leads a post-screening Q+A. Wayne was recently a Trustee of the Shakespeare Association of America, still serves on the editorial board of Shakespeare Quarterly, and is a member of the MLA’s committee on the New Variorum Shakespeare.
