About the Film:
Minneapolis’s Walker Art Center launched the first Internet Cat Video Festival in 2012 as a modest celebration to bring online communities together in the real world. #catvidfest is now an international viral phenomenon. For more information visit the Walker Art Center website. Special thanks to Scott Stulen and the Walker Art Center.
Last year, the festival (#catvidfest, as it is identified in the social-media world), the first of its kind in the world, drew a crowd of more than 10,000 to the Walker in Minneapolis.
“I hope that it will be an opportunity to come together and share a sincere moment of joy,” says Scott Stulen, one of the festival’s founders and project director at Walker Art Center. “The festival is meant to be an engaging social experience, so bring your friends and share online content offline. What I like to say is ‘it’s not about watching cat videos, but about watching cat videos together.’ ”
This year’s #catvidfest, which is comprised of more than 80 new videos selected by a team of jurors, includes favorite “celebri-cats” such as Henri and the ever-popular Japanese sensation Maru. As with last year’s festival, the clips are organized into Academy Awards-style “cat”-egories including Comedy, Drama, Documentary, Foreign, Musical, and Lifetime Achievement.
“The Honolulu festival is at the start of a 20-plus city tour in 2013-2014,” says Stulen. “This tour includes stops throughout the United States and even a screening at a pop-up drive-in theater in Northern Ireland.”
