About the Film:

Directed by Jillian Schlesinger. 2013. USA. 82 mins.

On January 2011, 14-year-old Laura Dekker set out—with camera in hand—on a two-year voyage to become the youngest person ever to sail around the world alone. It took a year-long battle with Dutch authorities (sparking a global media storm) for her to earn the right to be far from land, family, and unwanted attention, exploring the world in search of freedom, adventure, and distant dreams of her early childhood at sea. Jillian Schlesinger's debut feature documentary amplifies Laura’s brave, defiant voice through a mix of the teenager’s own video and voice recordings at sea and intimate vérité footage from locations including the Galápagos Islands, French Polynesia, Australia, and South Africa. Official Selection: Wild & Scenic Film Festival, Portland International Film Festival, Vancouver International Mountain Film Festival. Winner: Audience Award, SXSW Film Festival
