About the Film:
Slow is Fast: On the Road at Home
Directed by Kellen Keene. USA. 2014. 30 mins.
In September 2012, Dan Malloy, Kanoa Zimmerman and Kellen Keene jumped on a train in Southern California and headed north—along with bicycles, a surfboard, wetsuits, flippers, a microphone and some cameras. The idea was to travel down the California coast by bike, stopping to surf; staying with friends, family and acquaintances; poaching camps when need be and doing their best to earn their keep and to learn from folks they met along they way— a horse-powered farmer, a sign maker, a board shaper, a man who crafts prehistoric tools, a tracker, a blade smith, a free diver, and a family of knife throwers. The result is a beautifully crafted book and this short film.
Thicker Than Water
Directed by Jack Johnson, Chris Malloy and Emmett Malloy. USA. 1999. 45 mins.
Musician/filmmaker/surfer Jack Johnson teamed up with Chris and Emmett Malloy to direct the now classic Thicker Than Water, a film that changed the landscape of surf filmmaking. Shot on location in coastal regions of India, Ireland, Tahiti, Australia, and Hawaii, Thicker than Water combines stunning visuals with a killer soundtrack by Johnson, as well as Philadelphia rockers G. Love & Special Sauce, Japanese pop band Natural Calamity, British electronica trio Smoke City and singer/songwriter Todd Hannigan, who penned the title track and will perform at the Doris Duke Theatre on July 8.
