About the Film:
Spirit of Akasha
Directed by Andrew Kidman. Australia. 2014. 90 mins
July 19 at 7:30pm
July 20 at 4pm
An homage to Morning of the Earth, Spirit of Akasha reaffirms the original film’s ethos of soul and spirit in a present day context. Mentored by Albe Falzon himself, acclaimed Australian filmmaker Andrew Kidman (Litmus, Glass Love, Last Hope) has created a stunning tribute film that blends the realms of surfing, music, and filmmaking. The immersive experience is reminiscent of cult classics Koyaanisqatsi and Baraka. Shot in such locations as Australia, Hawai‘i, Bali, Fiji, Tahiti, Mexico and Ireland, Spirit of Akasha features pro surfers Mick Fanning, Stephanie Gilmore, Tom Curren, Kelly Slater, and Beau Young alongside the new guard of Heath Joske, Harrison Roach, Ellis Ericson, Ace Buchan, and John John Florence, as well as soul surfers Fergal Smith, and Joel and Kye Fitzgerald. Kidman’s stunning visuals are paired with a soundtrack that includes a rare Brian Wilson recording and new work by Atoms for Peace (Thom Yorke), Andrew VanWyngarden, Chris Robinson Brotherhood, Xavier Rudd, Angus Stone, Matt Corby, Dirty Three and more.
Coming Up for Air
Directed by Mickey Smith. UK. 2014. 5 mins.
Filmed in the dark, choppy waters off the Irish coast, and narrated by Cornish surfer Matt Smith, Coming Up for Air reveals the intense, inspiring nature of cold-water surfing.
