In 2012, New Zealand actor Rawiri Paratene was invited to open prestigious Globe to Globe Festival at London’t legendary Globe Theatre. The event featured 37 plays from 37 countries in 37 languages. Spanning the 12 weeks before the festival’s opening night, Road to the Globe follows Paratene as he recruits New Zealand’s best Māori actors for his company, Ngakau Toa, and captures their journey as they prepare to take their exquisite Te Reo Māori adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Troilus and Cressida to the Globe.
Kotiro Māori E: Māori Love Song Of Rongomaiwahine & Kahungunu
Directed by Ryan Baigent. Produced by Sophronia Smith. Aotearoa. 2014. 21 mins.
Kōtiro Māori E, written by ‘Uncle’ Tommy Taurima more than 40 years ago, is one of Aotearoa’s best-known songs and is often recognized as an anthem for descendants of rulers Rongomaiwahine and Kahungunu. The song takes its melody from the Hawaiian mele Kaulana Nā Pua (Famous are the Flowers), written by Eleanor Kekoaohiwaikalani Wright Prendergast in 1893 for members of the Royal Hawaiian Band who protested the overthrow of Queen Lili‘uokalani and the Kingdom of Hawai‘i. While the appropriated melody for Kōtiro Māori E has been a point of contention, this documentary celebrates and explores the fascinating connection between the two pieces, while acknowledging the deep connection between Kānaka Ōiwi and Tanagra Whenua, and the significance of the indigenous female political leaders Queen Lili’uokalani and Rongomaiwahine.
