About the Film:
Directed by Alex Gibney. USA | UK | Nigeria |France. 2014. 119 mins.
Hard-hitting documentarian Alex Gibney turns his unerring eye from the underbelly of corporate America and the US government (Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room, Oscar-winning Taxi to the Dark Side) to Nigerian superstar Fela Kuti and his revolutionary Afrobeat sound (Kuti died in 1997 of complications from AIDS). But it’s Gibney, so it’s not a feel-good film about the simple joys of music. Oh no, Finding Fela hones in on the musician’s courageous stand against a corrupt, dictatorial government. This sweeping portrait of artist as guerilla warrior, which includes never before seen footage and documents, gives testament to the transformative power of music as a force for social and political change.
