About the Film:
Persian Screen Film Festival Presented by:
Directed by Dariush Mehrjui. Iran. 2012. 107 mins. Persian with English subtitles.
Iranian New Wave icon Darius Mehjui’s quirky black comedy is about Hamed (Hamed Behdad), a photojournalist who becomes obsessed with cleaning up the streets of Tehran after reading a book on feng shui. Realizing that his photo essays are not having the desired impact, Hamed gives up photography to become a street sweeper, donning the titular garb of public-works officials. When his wife, a brilliant mathematician (played by Leila Hatami, who worked with Mehjui on 1998’s Leila), returns from her studies abroad, Hamed faces tough decisions about his family and his newfound cause. Mehjui’s perceptive comedy was a huge box office hit in Iran and won the award for Best Director at Fajr International Film Festival.
