About the Film:

Directed by Stuart Murdoch. UK. 2014. 111 mins

Did you know Stuart Murdoch, frontman of Scottish superstar twee band Belle and Sebastian, is also a filmmaker? Originally a recording project, God Help the Girl evolved into Murdoch’s directorial debut (he also wrote the script). Eve is a catastrophe—low on self-esteem but high on fantasy, especially when it comes to music. Over the course of one Glasgow summer, she meets two similarly rootless souls, posh Cass and fastidious James, and together they form a pop group. This poignant coming-of-age tale doubles as an indie-pop musical. Set in a bohemian fantasia of Glasgow’s West End (Murdoch’s home since attending university there in the late 80s) populated by mods, rockers, and emo kids who have no qualms about breaking into song and dance. God Help the Girl is a treat for the eyes and the ears. Star turns from Emily Browning (Sleeping Beauty, Sucker Punch), Olly Alexander (Le Week-End, Bright Star) and Hannah Murray (Game of Thrones, Skins) elevate what might have been an indie exercise to an emotional, heartfelt explosion of song and color.
