About the Film:

Part of the 13th Annual Temple Emanu-El Kirk Cashmere Jewish Film Festival

Directed by Julie Cohen. USA. 2014. 52 mins.

Julie Cohen captures this Manhattan institution, where New Yorkers have gone for lox and whitefish for a century. From founder Joel Russ, an immigrant from what is now southern Poland, to his great granddaughter Nikki Russ Federman, the film looks at the four generations of the Jewish family behind Russ and Daughters. Through an extensive conversation with two of the original daughters for whom the store was named, now 100 and 92 years old, as well as interviews with famous customers such as Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, New Yorker writer Calvin Trillin, and chef Mario Batali, The Sturgeon Queens paints a vivid, joyful picture of the beloved store.

Winner of the Audience Choice Award at the Palm Beach Jewish Film Festival, San Diego Jewish Film Festival and Los Angeles Jewish Film Festival
