About the Film:

Part of Korean Cinema 2017

Directed by Park In-je. South Korea. 2017. Starring Choi Min-sik, Kwak Do-won, and Shim Eun-kyung. Korean with English subtitles. 126 mins.

In the world of politics, everyone’s hands get dirty, and it’s no different for the beloved two-time Mayor of Seoul, Byeon Jong-gu, played by Choi Min-sik (Oldboy). Seeking a third term that will set him up for a run at the presidency, Byeon will stop at nothing to keep his darkest secrets hidden from his adoring public. Wiretapping, corruption, murder…everything is on the table and no one is safe in this hard-charging thriller whose twists will keep you guessing long after the credits roll.

Director Park In-je made his debut in 2011 with Moby Dick, a story about a reporter who tries to reveal the truth of an incident that was manipulated by power, and he was highly acclaimed for his messages reflecting the social world in this breathtaking production. He returns with The Mayor, to capture the world of a political election, which has rarely been seen in Korean cinema, with delicate direction and a keen eye. Through this film, he shows the unpredictable campaigns of politicians with strong desires for power, focusing on the realistic and fascinating subject of elections.

Saturday, Sep 9 at 4pm: Professor Myungji Yang from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa will provide a short introduction before the film.
