In the foreground are the remains of lava rock fortifications with four canons and a Hawaiian flag flying at full height. A small wooden shack with laundry hanging in front and a solitary female figure gazing out at the view complete the scene. The frame is painted to imitate "tiger"-stripe grain at the rim and a burled texture on the concave inner plane.
