SOLD OUT: BLKCORAL: Jackson Pollock Workshop for Kids
May 06, 2017 10:30am-12:30pm
This workshop is fully booked.
For children age 3–15
Price: $35 • $25 for museum members
The museum's biggest show of the year, Abstract Expressionism: Looking East from the Far West, opens Sept. 7, but kids (and their parents) can get a hands-on taste of what's to come in this workshop with Nikole Nelson, founder and creative director of the collaborative studio BLKCORAL.
Kids age 3 to 15 will use their whole bodies to create splattered masterpieces inspired by Jackson Pollock. Nikole, who holds this workshop annually, offers this session "to share a taste of complete freedom and abandonment through art with the keiki.” Children will make art to take home and their creativity will also help the museum—some of their work will be used to create custom décor for an upcoming event in May.
Parental supervision is required, and we highly recommended parents participate with children under 7. Parents and kids should dress to get dirty head to toe! Sometimes kids dive into their art and paint with their bodies. This class is about total freedom and painting with a wide range of physical motion. Protect hair (baseball cap, bandanas, shower caps, etc.).
What to bring: A change of clothes for the trip home, and drinking water—sometimes painting can feel like a workout.
The canvas will be 2 by 4 feet. We recommend that you leave artwork at Spalding House to dry and pick up the following week during business hours. The canvases are large and loaded with paint by completion. The paint is so thick that it takes several days to cure to the touch and be ready for travel. More information on pick-up times will be given at event.
