About the Film:
Part of Akira Kurosawa Retrospective
Directed by Akira Kurosawa. Japan. 1962. Japanese with English subtitles. 96 min.
The adventures of Sanjuro continue in this sequel, in which he is hired by a group of samurai to help them expose and weed out corrupt leadership within their clan. Kurosawa’s subversion of samurai heroics takes on a more comedic tone here than in Yojimbo, and the film’s double-crosses, clever plots, and charismatic cast of characters make it a wildly entertaining ride from start to finish. Also notable is Tatsuya Nakadai’s performance as Hanbei, a henchman to one of the corrupt clan bosses. Watch for his famous “quick-draw” standoff with Sanjuro, reminiscent of a gunfighter duel at high noon.
