About this Class:
Though it shares labels and featured contact with its Italian counterpart, the art of the Renaissance and Baroque eras in the north nonetheless emerged from its own distinct and striking social, religious, and economic backgrounds. Through lectures, discussions and a museum visit, this class will consider the ways that forces like a continuing Gothic sensibility, the uncovering of new techniques and media, the birth of the Protestant Reformation, and the development of a secular merchant middle class, helped chart the unique directions in which Northern Europe unfolded during the Renaissance and after, in both its art, and its society.
