Japanese textile artist Toru Ishii uses the Itome (“Fine-line”) Yuzen method of silk dyeing, through which he illustrates his views on contemporary Japanese society. For this artist talk, Ishii will explain his strategy for adapting historical Japanese textile dyeing methods for contemporary expression as well as a discussion on technique.

Toru Ishii was born in Shizuoka, Japan, and received his Ph.D. in Textile Arts in 2014 from the Tokyo University of the Arts. He has exhibited extensively both in solo and group shows in and outside Japan, including Edo Pop: The Graphic Impact of Japanese Prints (Japan Society Gallery, New York) andLook East! 2 (Mizuma Gallery, Singapore), and Delirious Metropolis (Daiwa Foundation Japan House Gallery, London).
