This simple Japanese running stitch was traditionally used to stitch together indigo fabric scraps with elaborate patterns of tortoise shells or clouds. Students stitch traditional patterns and apply the technique to renew clothing, bedding, or interior accessories. Prerequisite: Ability to sew a running stitch. Supply kit includes sashiko needles, threads, pins, dishcloth, hand-outs. June Hirano shops in Japan and uses sashiko to embellish Western clothing with kimono kogire pieces and paste-resisted indigo cottons.
