This eight-week introductory class provides in-depth instruction on the technical and conceptual aspects of working with wire, a modern metalsmithing essential to making jewelry. Potential projects and techniques include using the jeweler’s saw and mandrels for making jump-rings to build beautiful chains as bracelets, anklets, necklaces, or belts. Handmade clasps complete the projects by learning small-scale forging techniques. Additionally, instruction will cover the construction of chainmail; and European, Japanese, and Byzantine patterns. Nonprecious metals, such as brass and copper, and the use of a complete beginners' tool kit are included with tuition. Visits to explore the museum's collection will support lessons and provide inspiration for your work. This course is great for someone with no metals experience or who would like to brush up on their metalsmithing skills. No prior knowledge of metalwork or jewelry making is required.

Please note that there will be no class on Nov. 30.

Registration for this class closes on Oct. 5.
