A box-office sensation in North America when it was released in 1996, Shall We Dance? created a surge of interest in ballroom dancing and led to a Hollywood remake with Richard Gere and Jennifer Lopez. Now it has undergone a 4K restoration and is back in theaters 17 minutes longer in its original, uncut version.

The film stars Kōji Yakusho, who wowed audiences as a humble toilet cleaner in Wim Wenders’ 2023 Perfect Days. In his breakout role, he plays Shohei Sugiyama, a salaryman who seems to have it all—a high-paying job as an accountant, a beautiful home, a caring wife, and a doting daughter he loves dearly. However, he feels something is missing in his life. One day while commuting on the train he spots a beautiful woman staring wistfully out the window of a dance studio. He decides to find her, and his search leads him headfirst into the world of competitive ballroom dancing.
