Michael is an 11-year-old orphan who lives in a children's home. To win the respect of his peers, he gets into scraps daily. One day, he finds out who his father is and writes him a letter. His father, Tom, happens to be a person of short stature—even shorter than Michael. Tom wants to accept the challenge of fatherhood, even though he had no idea Michael existed. For Michael, Tom is the opposite of the strong, manly father of his imagination. When the other children learn about Tom’s size, Michael’s life at the home falls apart and he runs away. With no other place to go, he moves in with Tom. As time passes, they discover that they have more in common than most other sons and fathers.
