From a small town in Texas to big-time show business, comes an inspiring documentary of grit, perseverance and the redemptive power of art. As Hall prepares to launch his most ambitious project—the full-scale original musical Straight Outta Oz—we watch him struggle to write songs about growing up gay and black in small-town Texas, his difficult relationship with his mom, and the harsh realities of trying to make it in show business. With limited time and budget, the odds are against him, but Hall’s passion and his team of talented performers overcome all obstacles to bring this story to the world. Premiered at the 2017 SXSW Film Festival.
Opening-night reception: Aug 10, 6-7:45pm: hosted by Chiko’s Tavern in the Luce Pavilion.
Behind the Curtain: Todrick Hall screens at 7:45pm, followed by a Q&A with Todrick Hall.
Openly gay singer, songwriter, choreographer, actor, Broadway star (“Kinky Boots”), "RuPaul's Drag Race" judge and viral YouTube sensation, Todrick Hall introduces his most ambitious project yet: the DIY 16mm video visual album “Straight Outta Oz” - (#2 on the iTunes album charts). We follow Hall as he promptly takes on a nationwide tour in the form of an extravagant, full-scale, live musical in HRFF28’s opening night film Behind the Curtain: Todrick Hall.
