What to expect

See Art

On this hands-on tour, students learn about the building blocks that artists use to communicate their ideas—the elements and principles of art. With particular emphasis on line, shape, color, value, space, and pattern, students explore how artists from around the world and from multiple time periods have manipulated these elements and principles to engage viewers, to convey mood, and to transmit meaning.

Make Art

During the art-making session, students work with our Studio Programs teachers to apply awareness of the elements and principles in their own art. With the autonomy to choose artistic media that interest them from a variety of stations, and subject matter that they care about, the “Make Art” portion of the tour supports students in developing their own artistic voice.

Our docents and Studio Programs teachers tailor this tour to challenge, engage, and inspire all age groups in the K–12 grade range.

Math in Art (Grade 2–5)

What to expect

See Art

The Math in Art tour explores mathematical structures in artwork from multiple time periods and diverse artistic traditions. Students will investigate how artists use linear perspective and other techniques to create the illusion of three-dimensional space; they will discover how fractions can inform the work of portrait artists; and they will explore concepts of symmetry and tessellation in geometric patterns of the Islamic world.

Make Art

During the art-making session, students work with our Studio Programs teachers to apply their understanding of mathematical structures in art to their own art. With the autonomy to choose artistic media of their interest from a variety of stations, and subject matter they care about, the “Make Art” portion of the tour supports students in developing their own artistic voice.

Our docents and Studio Programs teachers tailor this tour to challenge, engage, and inspire all age groups in the 2 to 5 grade range.
