Hokusai's Mount Fuji

February 15 2020–October 3, 2021
Gallery 3 / ATSUHIKO & INA GOODWIN TATEUCHI THEMATIC GALLERY

From October 2020 through October 3, 2021, the Honolulu Museum of Art’s newly designated Atsuhiko and Ina Tateuchi Foundation Japanese Thematic Gallery will feature Hokusai’s Mount Fuji, an in-depth exploration of one of the most famous ukiyo-e series in the museum’s collection: Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji (c.1830–1832) by Katsushika Hokusai (1760–1849).

Seventeen masterpieces will be displayed one at a time for two-week intervals, including the renowned Great Wave Off Kanagawa (on view November 12, 2020–November 29, 2020, and September 23, 2021–October 3, 2021), and Thunderstorm Beneath the Summit (on view April 8, 2021–April 25, 2021). This intimate display of individual works will offer visitors an opportunity to focus upon the subtle, technical details of each print. Other sections of the gallery will include text panels that discuss Hokusai’s artistic career, the mythological significance of Mount Fuji, and the importance of Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji within the history of Japanese landscape prints.

Made possible by the Robert F. Lange Foundation and the Atshuhiko and Ina Tateuchi Foundation.
