What to expect during a Soundshop workshop
Each Soundshop workshop features seasoned local artists and award-winning musicians who lead groups as mentors. During the three-hour workshop, students will be introduced to basic components of music theory and creative writing, while exploring themes such as identity, community, and social history. The workshop comprises four main components:
- Meet-and-greet with introductory performances by Soundshop mentors and any guest artists.
- Engage in group discussions in the galleries focusing on relevant themes, the artist’s creative process, narrative construction, and social and cultural critical thinking.
- Students break out into groups led by the mentors for lyric writing, beat-making, and other ideas for a live performance.
- Students will have the opportunity to conclude the workshop by performing their work on stage at the Doris Duke Theatre
Funding for Soundshop Workshops is provided by The Arthur and Mae Orvis Foundation, Inc. and The Kosasa Foundation.
