Carrying Culture: Micronesia

May 29 to November 27, 2021

In this three-part poetry series, we highlight poets and poetry as carriers of culture, with a focus on Micronesia, a region that is homeland to many islanders in Hawai‘i. Each program is dedicated to uplifting and celebrating the life experience, wisdom, and leadership of the Micronesian community through storytelling, spoken word, and community conversation.

Starting in May, Carrying Culture: Micronesia – Voices of Life, includes three poets who featured in Indigenous Literatures From Micronesia, the first anthology of creative writing from this region. In June, Carrying Culture: Micronesia – Voice of Our Youth highlights young Micronesian poets and their approach in their art. The series ends in November with Carrying Culture: Micronesia – Voices of Solidarity featuring poets from Polynesian and Melanesian cultural groups who share their words as a demonstration of solidarity with Micronesians in Hawai’i who face rising discrimination.

Micronesians in Hawai‘i do not come to this country with baskets empty, waiting for a handout. They come to Hawai‘i with baskets full of life-affirming values and positive cultural practices that can enrich the societies of this state and country.

Presented in partnership with the Pacific Islands Development Program.
