The most successful Swiss film in Swiss box-office history is a lavish adaptation of the country’s most famous literary export. Alpine orphan Heidi leads an idyllic childhood with her eccentric grandfather (Bruno Ganz!), cut off from the outside world in a simple cabin. With her friend Peter, she tends to her grandfather's goats, splashes in ponds and sleds through virgin powder. But the carefree times come to an abrupt end when Aunt Dete whisks Heidi off to Frankfurt to be a playmate for a wealthy, wheelchair-bound girl named Klara, while also being formally educated. Although the two girls become friends and Klara's grandmother awaknes a passion for books in Heidi, the pull of the mountains and her grandfather grows.
