About the Film:

Part of European Cinema 2018.

Directed by Lucas Belvaux. France | Belgium. 2017. 118 min. In French with English subtitles.
Described as France’s most controversial film of 2017, this is the fictionalized story of a working-class single mother’s political awakening. Pauline, a self-employed nurse in a mining district in the north of France, raises her two children and cares for her father, a left-wing steelworker. Devoted and generous, her patients love her and count on her—yet nobody sees that Pauline, who finds herself facing an increasingly harsh social reality, is slowly embarking on a path that no one in her family has taken before. Pauline confronts the realities of her divided community as the rising nationalist party, led by a Marine Le Pen look-alike, makes her its mayoral candidate in the local elections. The Hollywood Reporter predicted “it will inspire spirited audience discussion in cinema lobbies—and beyond.”
