This documentary about the dismal number of women directors working in Hollywood uses the current EEOC investigation into discriminatory hiring practices as a framework to talk to successful women directors about their career paths, struggles, inspiration and hopes for the future.
Half the Picture features interviews with accomplished, high-profile directors Ava DuVernay, Jill Soloway, Lena Dunham, Catherine Hardwicke, and Miranda July, among many others. The film also includes interviews with experts about gender inequality in Hollywood including the ACLU’s Melissa Goodman, Sundance Institute’s Caroline Libresco, Vanity Fair’s Rebecca Keegan, USC’s Dr. Stacy Smith, and San Diego State University’s Dr. Martha Lauzen.
On Saturday, March 16 at 4pm, the film screens with short film Summer in Hers Season, directed by Sunhee Na (20 min)—While preparing for her wedding, Se-Yeon searches for her mom who has suddenly disappeared.
On Sunday, March 17 at 1pm, the film screens with short film Something Different directed by Anna Rose-li Epstein (7 min)—Wanting something more from life, a chance meeting sends two women on a quest for love in this romantic musical.
